LHHINS Wait List 2023
Purpose
The Lisa Hannegan Humanitarian International Neuroscience Scholarship (LHHINS) aims to promote the advancement of neuroscience and neurosurgery worldwide by facilitating observership, education, training and research for healthcare professionals involved in neuroscience and neurosurgery. It also aims to help address the inequality gap in neurosurgical care by providing the opportunity for open exchange and meaningful partnerships among healthcare professionals around the world and providing access and exposure to different health care systems and encourage exploring solutions to disparities in access and quality.

Who Can Apply?
Just as Lisa Hannegan, for whom the scholarship is named in honor of was a strong advocate for teamwork and the epitome of how dynamic teams result in exemplary work, these scholarships are multidisciplinary. It is open to junior neurosurgeons, residents, medical students focusing on neurosurgery, nurses and junior neuroscientists. A total of four scholarships will be awarded with two scholarships for observerships in the U.S.A. and two for partner institutions abroad.

Funding Available
The LHHINS scholarship will award up to $6,000 per individual to support travel, observerhsip, training and research activities and other expenses related to their neurosurgical/neuroscience educational experience.

Application Criteria
  • Applicants who are professionals must have a valid license without any disciplinary history. Student applicants must be in good standing with their educational institution.
  • Applicants must be able to travel to the institutions they will be working/training with. Any Visa requirements will be the responsibility of the applicant.
  • Applicants must clearly demonstrate their interest and commitment to improving neurosurgery/neuroscience and health equity.
  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they are able to work well with a team and be respectful to the culture and norms of their host institutions.
  • Applicants should clearly define how the scholarship will positively impact their practice/education.
  • Applicants must submit a project proposal with project completion report provided at the end of experience or in the case of a long-term continuing project a status report must be submitted.
  • Applicants are responsible for complying with specific requirements from their host institutions.
  • All travel requirements, including vaccinations are the responsibility of the applicant but costs can be covered by scholarship funding.

Funding Costs

​The scholarship funds can be applied to:

Travel
  • Costs required to travel from home country to host institutions
  • Vaccination/medication costs required to travel
  • Accommodation and subsistence costs

Education/Observership
  • Required fees in host institutions
  • Class, seminar and conference fees
  • Costs required to carry out project

Assessment Criteria
  1. Quality of supportive references.
  2. Does the applicant demonstrate a clear passion for neurosurgery/neuroscience and health equity?
  3. Has the applicant shown prior efforts towards collaboration and community service?
  4. What is the value of the project to neurosurgery/neuroscience and the greater community? What is its impact to patients, professional development and education?
  5. How innovative is the project or activity?
  6. Does the applicant exhibit the needed capabilities and experience to be able to successfully undertake the project?
  7. Overall quality of application.

Requirements
All applicants must complete the application form and submit it on or before the deadline. The following documents should also be submitted:
  • Project proposal
  • Current CV
  • A letter of support from the applicant’s supervisor, manager, clinical director or equivalent.
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Required travel documents including Visa
  • Required vaccination record specific to host institution/country
