Building Neurosurgical Capacity in Sierra Leone By Dr. Peter Bangura

In this powerful session of the Mission:Brain Lecture Series, Dr. Peter Bangura shared his personal journey into neurosurgery—tracing his path from Freetown, Sierra Leone to Rabat, Morocco. As the first neurosurgical trainee from a country of over 8 million people with no neurosurgeons, Dr. Bangura highlighted the urgent need for continued medical education, infrastructure development, and international collaboration. He discussed the obstacles he faced during medical training, his frontline experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the critical role of Mission:Brain’s training programs. The session concluded with reflections on the challenges of telemedicine, the importance of partnerships in establishing residency programs, and the shared mission to expand neurosurgical care in Sierra Leone.
