Establishing Neurosurgical Capacity in Sierra Leone

Capacity building means local surgeons, trained teams, and infrastructure that lasts. In Sierra Leone, a country of eight million that had no neurosurgeon until 2025, that work is underway.

Capacity Building Model

A framework, not a one-time effort

Every program follows the same sequence: understand the need, train local teams, equip them, and hand over leadership. Treat. Educate. Empower.

Assess

2023 assessment led by Drs. Megan Still, Kee Park, and Tariq Khan, alongside Sierra Leone's clinicians.

Train

Two surgeons and 24 nurses trained so far. The nurses now teach the next cohort themselves.

Equip

A donated Doppler ultrasound replaced equipment the hospital previously rented at cost per case.

Sustain

The Sierra Leone chapter and the Connaught team lead the program. Local leadership is the goal.

Ongoing Programs

Six programs, each one already running.

Six concrete programs. Each one backed by a real initiative, not a promise.

Surgical training for local surgeons

Two surgeons trained and now operating in Sierra Leone.

Nursing certification in neurotrauma

Twenty-four nurses certified and now teaching the next cohort.

Donations make equipment possible

A donated Doppler unit now supports complex cases that previously required costly per-use rentals.

Patient access througha Sababu fund

A hospital fund covering care for patients who cannot pay. Sababu is Creole for helping those in need.
